Growing up, the Harry Potter books and movies were a huge source of magic in my life. Some of my favorite memories are elbowing my dad to read on, as he had a habit of falling asleep mid chapter thanks to our insistence that one chapter was never enough.. Now that I'm an adult, Harry Potter has taken on a new type of magic in my life. It has become my safe space when life gets to be a bit much (like a pandemic for example). I will never tire of hearing Stephen Fry announce the next chapter in the audiobooks, I will never not be excited when I hear the music as the Warner Brother logo comes on screen at the start of every movie, and I will continue to take out the books every so often and marvel at the artwork at the top of every chapter. So, you can imagine my excitement as a H.P. nerd and Interior Designer when I saw MinaLima carried wallpaper from the Wizarding World.. If you aren't a huge nerd like me, MinaLima is the graphic design team that crafted the entire graphic style of all the Harry Potter movies! Pretty cool right??
By chance, I was already in the process of thinking up ideas for how to give our cookie cutter home a bit of character. I wanted our powder room to be dark and moody and feel like you are entering a whole different world since it's so close to our main living space. As soon as I saw the Black Family Tapestry wallpaper I had the vision in my mind.
After I found the absolute treasure that was the MinaLima wallpaper, I went hunting for pieces I could use that related back to the wizarding world without being overtly obvious or kitschy.. I wanted it to be almost a secret treasure that only other Harry Potter fans would pick up on. If you had never seen the movies, you wouldn't know this is a themed room.. But if you had, it would be like stepping right into #12 Grimmauld Place!
I hit the jackpot again with the Nagini Mirror from Pottery Barn Teen's Wizarding World Collection. The antique brass snakes really look like they are slithering around the frame and the way it reflects light is pretty darn magical. I remember opening the box and getting a little startled as one of the snake heads popped out looking a little too realistic.. Just the effect I was hoping for..lol!
For the wainscot I decided to color match the darkest green found in the wallpaper and used it in a satin finish to paint the beadboard, trim and base. The color is Benjamin Moore Black Forest Green which is so dark it's almost black. But it has such a depth of color in it that changes depending on the light, especially with the satin finish.
Since this is a powder room in a home we don't plan on staying in very long, I really wanted this to be an affordable project. So we ended up doing a peel and stick flooring from TrafficMaster in a diamond checker pattern. We used a black marble and a white marble and then used black grout to make it appear less like vinyl and more like a tile. We also saved money by getting our faucet and accessories from Amazon!
With the busy flow of life and relying heavily on my dads availability to help, we ended up sitting with a half completed bathroom for a few months. But just last week I added the final detail! A framed page from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that includes the scene where the Black family tapestry is introduced. Another maybe less subtle hint to the inspiration of the space. I have been so eager to share this update as it's something rather unique to our typical projects, but also because it shares a big part of my home and my nerdy passion for Harry Potter. I hope that even if you are not a fan of the wizarding world, that you are a fan of this powder room! Enjoy the gallery of images below :)
