Is it important to include furniture selection when you hire an interior designer for full-service design?
The answer is absolutely YES.
Even if your finishes are showstoppers, it's often the furniture and accessories that bring the space to life. They're the final layer, the pieces that transform a beautiful room into one that feels intentional, complete, and truly yours.
Imagine wrapping up a new construction or renovation, only to realize that something still feels off once you start filling the space with furniture. That disconnect often happens when furniture isn’t considered part of the overall design story. Furniture can either elevate a space, or unintentionally disrupt the balance and flow. It’s the element that grounds the design, sets the tone, and supports how the space functions day to day.
The image on the left makes me laugh every time.. This is the perfect example of how incomplete a space is without furniture. Even with the beautiful soapstone fireplace, and thoughtful built-ins, a space isn’t truly complete until it’s layered with furniture, accessories, and personal touches. This transformation is a perfect example of how furnishings bring warmth, balance, and a lived-in feeling that finishes alone can’t achieve. Design is in the details, and those final layers matter.
So why is it so important anyways??
As interior designers, we approach each project holistically. That means we’re not just picking pretty finishes—we’re building a layered story that spans materials, light, texture, function, and mood. Furniture and accessories are essential pieces of that narrative.
When we visualize a space, we’re already seeing the sofa that balances the fireplace, the side table that brings contrast, the artwork that echoes a subtle motif in the tile. These elements aren’t afterthoughts—they’re part of the design from the very beginning.
From the 3D rendering during the design process (left photo), to the final built space (right photo). We plan for furniture from the very beginning, making sure every piece supports the flow, function, and feeling of the room. When furniture is part of the original design story, the end result feels effortless, cohesive, and completely tailored to the client.
The Benefits of Including Furniture in Full-Service Interior Design
1. Expertise & Efficiency
We don’t just know how to make it look good, we know how to make it work. We follow structured workflows, manage budgets, track orders, and coordinate deliveries. All the logistical headaches? We’ve got them covered.
2. Cohesive, Scaled Design
Buying furniture piece by piece often leads to a mismatched collection of styles or awkward proportions. We take scale, proportion, balance, contrast, and rhythm into account. Whether we’re working around existing pieces or starting from scratch.
3. Access to Exclusive & Custom Pieces
Designers often have access to trade-only vendors, artisan makers, and customizable options you won’t find on retail websites. We also know where to source the perfect piece, without spending weeks scrolling and second-guessing.
4. Sustainable, Thoughtful Sourcing
Interior designers are intentional about where and how we source. We know which pieces are worth investing in for longevity and which materials will stand the test of time. We often incorporate vintage or reclaimed furniture to bring character while keeping waste out of landfills. By avoiding fast furniture and trend-chasing, we help clients create spaces that feel fresh for years (not just one season) while reducing their environmental impact.
What About the Pieces You Already Have and Love?
One of the most common questions we get is: "What if I have furniture I want to keep? Can we work around them?" The answer is a wholehearted yes.
When a piece has meaning, whether it's a vintage dresser passed down through your family or a sofa you still love, we make it a part of the design conversation from day one. Rather than treating it as an afterthought, we design around it intentionally, selecting new items that complement, contrast, or elevate what you already own.
This process not only makes your space feel more personal and lived-in, but also creates a unique blend of old and new that feels grounded and authentic. We’ll work with scale, palette, and proportion to ensure those sentimental or investment pieces feel at home in your newly designed space. Because good design doesn’t mean starting from scratch. It means building something meaningful.

So why doesn't every project include this??
The most common reason? Budget.
It’s often assumed that furniture can wait until “later”, that it’s a bonus, not a necessity. But in reality, furniture should be part of the initial project planning and budgeting. When it's left for another time, the result can often feel incomplete or inconsistent.
While we understand that not every project can include furniture due to budget constraints, we’ll always advocate for including it when you can. It’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about how you live, how you feel, and how your space supports you every day.
Your home deserves to feel complete, not like it’s waiting for a second act.
